Sustainability

Our approach to sustainability

As a company committed to responsible business practices, particularly in the challenging cocoa industry, we are paving our path to sustainability across all aspects of our operations. This involves defining and managing the material topics through which we have social, economic, and environmental impact. Our approach is based on the concept of double materiality assessment, as outlined by the voluntary GRI standard and the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), a component of CSRD. The double materiality assessment we have conducted is consisting of three main stages: impact materiality, financial materiality, and stakeholder engagement.

EUDR

Internally, we have developed ESG expertise and capacity and established a team to address sustainability matters. We have conducted training sessions covering key concepts and best practices in various ESG aspects, including decarbonization, deforestation, and others. We have also reviewed the relevant industry challenges, client requirements, expectations of our partners and other stakeholders, as well as the best practices of our competitors. With these efforts combined, we have conducted a comprehensive assessment of material topics through multiple steps.
Definition of ESG topics We identified the ESG topics potentially relevant to our business.
We created a list of these topics and determined their scope, which we subsequently evaluated within a working group involving our ESG team and managers.
Impact materiality assessment (“Inside-out”) Assessing the significance of Alcao’s impacts on society and
environment:

  • Considered stages of the value chain mainly relevant to the operations in Bulgaria, as well as the sourcing aspects (upstream activities and market operations);
  • Based on several criteria, such as scale, scope and remediability of the impacts.
Financial assessment (“Outside-in”)

Assessing the significance of ESG impacts on Alcao:

  • Potential impact of sustainability topics on Alcao’s performance and business overall;
  • Evaluation for each ESG topic (long list) in terms of risks and opportunities, based on the criteria magnitude and likelihood;
  • Considered also international policies and regulations.
Stakeholders Perspective We identified key internal and external stakeholders and
considered their input during the assessment of the material
topics. We conducted a survey among our employees, clients, and partners to gather their opinions on which topics they consider
important in terms of sustainability
Materiality Matrix Following the assessment, the materiality matrix was validated by the top management, outlining the company’s priority
sustainability areas.
